Success Story for:
Roger & Shirley Henson of Roger Henson Trucking, LLC
Roger Henson Trucking was started in Whiteville, Tennessee as a partnership with his wife Shirley in 1975. It is a veteran owned business. With 40 trucks and an equal number of trailers, the business soon outgrew the Whiteville location so the business moved to Bolivar, Tennessee building a facility comprised of office space and a truck servicing shop at a cost of $300,000. Their fleet has now grown to 72 trucks and over 200 trailers servicing a nationwide network of customers.
In 2009 they approached Joel Newman, Senior Small Business Specialist with the TSBDC at Jackson State Community College for help in development of a second location in Bolivar to start-up a new business, Henson Logistics, LLC. This new venture would be managed by Henson’s son. The TSBDC assisted the business by leveraging local government and economic development funds in the purchase of the firms Lake Street building. The new location is a 150,000 square foot facility which Henson Logistics effectively expanded to the equivalent of 200,000 square feet through a system of racking and vertical shelving.
The two companies currently employ 87 workers. Gross sales in 2009 were $10 million; and $14 million in 2012. They are on track to exceed that amount in 2013.
The logistics business has a great opportunity for growth and the TSBDC is heavily involved in the planning to make it happen. Storage in the Lake Street building is currently designated for Citco, Kenmac Metals, Canada Freight Store, Richburg and their largest customer, Thyssen Krupp. Thyssen Krupp indicated their need for the entire building. Henson Logistics has been leasing additional space in order to satisfy their customers growing needs. The firm is now looking at the feasibility of building another 100,000 square foot building in Bolivar.
The Henson Logistic expansion is projected to create at least 40 new jobs and retain at least 10. The TSBDC will continue to work closely with both Roger Henson Trucking, LLC and Henson Logistics, LLC as they move forward with their expansion plans.
Roger Henson Trucking is also a community-minded firm, donating trailers to the Bolivar High School Band, to the local Fire Department for training, and contributing to various community events as a sponsor.
