A family-owned business for over 25 years, McCurdy Sod Farms was used to doing things the way they had always been done, where marketing was concerned.  That is, until they attended a free training workshop provided by the Small Business Development Center at Dyersburg State Community College.  The McCurdy’s learned that increasing market share using social media marketing was exactly what they needed to do in order to grow their business and carry on the McCurdy Sod Farm legacy for another 25 years.

Experts in the turf grass industry, Bob and Suzanne McCurdy’s product and service standards have never been higher than they are today.  Certified, in accordance with the Tennessee Crop Improvement Association, their fields are inspected 3 times each year by inspectors trained to identify potential problems and ensuring that their product is just as superior as their customer service.  But, even with such a superior product and commitment to outstanding customer service they recognized that their business was not growing.  So, armed with the wealth of information they obtained from the SBDC workshop they contacted the director of the Small Business Development Center for one-to-one counseling in the area of market share expansion and improved market strategy development.

Over the course of the next year, following a prescription for marketing recommended to them by their SBDC Business Counselor, the McCurdy’s are realizing a strong improvement in their online presence.  This has resulted in increased sales from both existing customers and new customers they reached through social media and an improved website.  It just goes to show that the grass really is greener when a small business understands the importance of having a commitment to their customers which includes using a modern, innovative and social marketing strategy to reach them. “We are so thankful for the expert business counseling we are receiving from the SBDC at Dyersburg State Community College because it really is working,” said Bob McCurdy.
