Lisa Sorensen and Scott Schimmel of Bliss Home
Lisa Sorensen and Scott Schimmel have never been ones to let obstacles slow them down. The married owners of bliss and bliss Home opened their first shop in 2003 at the height of Market Square infrastructure reconstruction. However, they wanted to be part of the revitalization of downtown Knoxville and Market Square needed retail. Often navigating the Square via board walks bridging a sea of mud, Scott and Lisa persevered. “It wasn’t easy. There were a lot of lean days with no vacation. We literally worked seven days a week“ Sorensen recalled.
Bliss Home, a furniture interior design, and accessories store opened in 2005 on Market Square. When the economic crisis hit in 2008, Lisa and Scott headed west and opened a 13,000-square-foot furniture showroom. The stores have evolved over the years as Lisa and Scott learned what worked and what didn’t. “Our motto is: Let’s try something, and if it’s not paying the rent it has to go” said Lisa. The businesses now include a gift and apparel shop and two home-furnishing stores and have grown from one employee to over forty employees in the past decade.
Lisa Sorensen and Scott Schimmel have been clients of Larry Rossini, Knoxville TSBDC Director, for over ten years, completed the twelve module Strategic Management Learning System program in the winter and spring of 2006/2007 and continue to consult with Larry as needs arise.
