Patriot Arms, LLC is located in downtown Erwin, TN, a small rural town in Unicoi County. It began operations in January 2015 as a retail firearms dealer and gunsmith. The primary customer groups include gun owners needing firearms repair services and firearms customization. A secondary customer group is comprised of local law enforcement personnel (city police and county sheriff) requiring services and supplies. Business revenues are increasing month to month, but full year’s operations have yet to be reported.

Mr. J.D. Hill, the owner, is a recently discharged service connected disability veteran that was an armorer in the US Air Force. He wanted to start his own gunsmithing business and had attended several gunsmithing certification courses. He was referred by a bank for assistance with business planning and loan application.

The TSBDC began working with Mr. Hill in July 2014. The client did not know what a business plan was or how to prepare. We provided him with a copy of the TSBDC’s Business Planning Guide (Upstart) and discussed each section and where to find the appropriate information. Periodic meetings were held with the client to discuss progress and problems. This continued until November 2014 by when the client had a completed business plan and SBA Veteran’s Advantage Loan Application complete.

The client submitted the application to Mountain Commerce Bank and was awarded a $93,000 SBA loan. The business commenced operations on January 26, 2015.
