Frank Legrain of Biotic Industries
In 1986, Francois “Frank” Legrain started Biotic Industries in the U.S. as a separate operating entity of the business whose origins are in France. The company, which manufactures automatic feeders for livestock – cattle, sheep, and goats –, has experienced steady growth since its inception. The equipment mixes milk replacer with warm water. The business origins are simple. The founder, Frank’s father Michel Legrain, designed and patented the automatic feeder to improve feeding efficiency of livestock on his farm. Today’s product is technologically evolved to the point of being able to adjust the feed composition, by animal, through the utilization of RFID tagging. Acting on a referral from the University of Tennessee – Procurement Technical Assistance Center, the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) at Middle Tennessee State University contacted Biotic to see how we could be of assistance. In the initial meeting with Biotic, Frank advised that although the business was operating profitably, he wanted help in creating a more strategic marketing plan to increase sales, and once increased, insure that his manufacturing plant was optimized for efficient production so that the business would also realize an accompanying increase in profitability. Working with the TSBDC-MTSU, a strategic marketing plan was developed to significantly increase Biotic’s exposure to its target market. The 2014 operating results will show an 80% increase in revenues, with a like increase in profitability. With the revenue increase, Biotic was able to add 2 more people in the plant, and one in the office to handle the increased customer and supplier demands of the expanded business.
