Craig Charles came to the Tennessee Small Business Development Center at East Tennessee State University in Fall 2014 with his vision for a barber’s academy and to begin developing action steps to make his vision a reality. Craig had owned and operated a barber shop, Craig’s Crown Cutz, for more than a decade, but he wanted some input into business planning and financing before he pursued the opening of an academy.

The TSBDC assisted Craig by providing startup assistance, business plan development and financial projections, then helped him obtain financing and acted as an overall resource throughout the process. “The TSBDC helped me see my vision through a different lens, which helped me accomplish my goal of opening my barber academy,” Craig said.

Crown Cutz Academy was successfully established in 2015 in downtown Johnson City. The academy provides high-quality barber education in the Tri-Cities region. Currently, it is the only barber academy within a 90-mile radius of their location. In its third year of operation, Crown Cutz Academy has five full-time employees.
