Success Story for:
Brandy Bonner Aden of A & B Construction Company Inc.
A & B Construction Company, Inc., is a woman-owned commercial and industrial general contractor for new construction, interior/exterior remodel construction and building maintenance for restaurants, offices, schools, airports, city properties, banking facilities, manufacturing facilities, shipping facilities and government facilities.
Brandy Bonner Aden, President of A & B Construction, and her team have grown A & B Construction into one of the largest woman-owned construction firms in Tennessee based on revenue and has become a sought after firm due to quality, service and competitive pricing. Customers include FedEx, First Tennessee, Nike and Tennessee Air National Guard. In 2017, A & B Construction landed a $2.79 million construction contract with the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority to replace concourse baggage claim carousels.
Aden always wanted to compete for larger construction contract opportunities, but assumed her firm was too small when compared to other general contractors in the Mid-South area. Brandy sought the assistance of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) at Southwest Tennessee Community College for a competitive analysis of the local construction industry.
TSBDC used two market research resources that are free for center clients, ReferenceUSA and SBDCNet. ReferenceUSA is a leading provider in business and consumer research that can help help small businesses create marketing plans, conduct competitive analysis and locate people. SBDCNet is the official National Information Clearinghouse of the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBDCNet produces a broad range of financial, market and demographic research reports customized to SBDC client’s industry and geographic location.
After synthesizing the data, it showed A & B Construction was actually comparable in size to many of the general contractors who obtained larger construction contracts. Brandy decided to bid on larger contracts and obtain certifications that could give her firm a competitive advantage.
A & B Construction has since been featured and honored by numerous local and regional organizations for its growth and commitment to quality work. Having recently invested an additional $150,000 in the company, Brandy Bonner Aden expects continued growth and wants to serve as an example for other women hoping to enter the construction industry. Aden added, “TSBDC helps me to grow A & B Construction by teaching more innovative ways to make financial decisions. Your information is priceless.”
